Vignoble Abeille, AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rouge, 2018

The wine
It was in the 14th century that the Popes had their residence built in Châteauneuf, far from the bustle of the Avignon court. Pope John XXII had the fortress built, of which only the ruins remain today. Fascinated by the wine of Châteauneuf, the Pope developed the vineyard and ensured its renown. A true ode to the simple pleasures of life, the happiness of this world shows all the richness of the Appellation Châteauneuf du Pape.
The appellation area is located on the left bank of the Rhône, between Orange and Avignon. The appellation is characterized by a mosaic of terroirs, the main one being characterized by large rolled pebbles that store the heat of the generous sun of Provence during the day and release it at night. The depth of the pebbles can reach 2 meters; below, there is a clay bank where the roots of the vine draw their water needs: an exceptional terroir. The Urgonian limestones bring minerality and freshness to the blend, especially for the whites.
Long traditional fermentation in stainless steel vats: 15 days to 3 weeks with destemming and crushing of the entire harvest. No carbonic maceration. Fermentation using indigenous yeasts on the vast majority of the vats. Extraction by pigeage. Maturing partly in Burgundy pieces and in stainless steel tanks for 12 months.
Grenache noir : 65%
Syrah : 15%
Cinsault : 10%
Mourvèdre : 10%
