Terres du Trias, AOC Beaumes de Venise, Rouge, 2018

Story

The wine
The Beaumes de Venise is located in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail in the Rhone Valley. This majestic mountain chain features a unique terroir surrounding the village of Beaumes de Venise. A geological fault has left outcrops of three different soil types aged 100 to 230 million years: the Terres Blanches de Bel Air, the Terres Grises des Farisiens, and the Terres Ocres du Trias. The artisan winegrowers of Beaumes de Venise selected the finest plots from each of these terroirs to reflect the outstanding personality of this rare natural setting. We invite you to discover each of these 3 terroirs and to taste the marvellous gifts nature has bestowed on us.
Terroir
Some 230 million years old, Les Terres du Trias, recognisable due to their ochre colour, have rich, smooth soil ideal for making exceptional wine. While not very fertile, this terroir has good drainage, but can also cope with drought conditions. In this way, Les Terres du Trias avoids excessive water stress to produce a unique, well-structured, warm, and powerful wine.
Vinification
The grapes are picked when perfectly ripe and handled with the greatest of care – destemmed, crushed, put into vat, and maintained at a carefully controlled temperature. Fermentation focuses on bringing out the wine’s ripe fruit and spicy aromas. Rack and return, as well as regular aeration of the must during fermentation are responsible for smooth, silky tannin.

Advice

Tasting notes
This wine owns a dark ruby red, slightly purple around the rim, impression of maturity. The nose has a powerful envelopment of spicy blackberries. Opens with aromas of brandied cherries and discrete leather and forest undergrowth notes. Mouth-filling, fresh and mature, nuances of black fruits, liqueurs, and fine spices evolving to a slightly woody base note. The finish is well-structured, with soft tannins.
Food pairing
This is a great wine with roast beef, vegetables, casseroles, cheeses and cèpes risotto.

"The 2018 Beaumes de Venise Terres du Trias is a blend of Grenache and Syrah derived from ochre clay soils at 300–400 meters above sea level. A fifth of the wine will spend a year in 400-liter oak, then be blended with the remainder for another six months in tank. At the moment, it's my favorite of the various Beaumes de Venise cuvées, showing a fantastic bouquet of cherries, raspberries and garrigue. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and velvety, finishing with plenty of flavor and hints of licorice."
