Terroir Daronton - Fût de Chêne, AOC Vacqueyras, Rouge, 2016

Presentation

Presentation
Bringing together 236 artisan winegrowers in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail, Rhonéa produces a wine from one of the richest winegrowing terroirs in the Rhone, called Daronton, the name of the family who first planted the vineyard three generations ago. Formed by ice volcanoes 60 million years ago, the Dentelles de Montmirail comprise a patchwork of evaporate, blue clay, and limestone that give the wines a powerful, elegant, and deep flavour profile. The layers of sediment found several kilometres down rise to the surface here to form a terroir unlike any other in the world.
Terroir
Mainly produced from vines on plateaux at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, this wine is a blend of wines from various terroirs with claylimestone soil mixed with river stones.
Vinification
The grapes are entirely hand picked. Very low yields account for superb concentration. The Syrah and Grenache are fermented separately using traditional methods. The Grenache is patiently aged in large casks for 12 months to soften the tannin, whereas the Syrah is aged in small new barrels. The blend is one of the reasons that contributes to the magic of this superb wine.

Advice

Tasting
The extraordinarily rich bouquet has luscious hints of candied black fruit, blueberries and spice which tell us that this is a great Vacqueyras. Vieilles Vignes is full-bodied and rich on the palate with velvety tannin. This cuvee has a beautiful liquorice aftertaste as well as obviously fine ageing potential.
Food pairings
A prestigious wine for important occasions, best served capon roasted with truffles, pigeon stuffed with foie gras, vegetable pies and risottos. Great ageing potential (up to 10 years). It is suggested to serve this wine at room temperature and decant it one hour beforehand.
